Spring-Summer

October 23

Last Day Of The 2003 Regular Season

It gets dark early in late October, so all the photos are dim and the action shots are abstracts
worthy of Picasso as the shutter slowed down to compensate for the low light and the action moved as
fast as ever.  Athletes in the final regular season photo above are Ed, Ron, Leo, Betty, Steve and Richard.
Kathy doing the lens clicking honors.
Next week will begin our experiment with indoor play at Cohn Community Ed Center.  We have a
court next Thursday, October 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 and possibly later if no one else wants to use it.  If you
haven't already signed up you can do it at Cohn.  Just bring $10 and give it to Ron.
See you next Thursday, October 30, at high 5:30 for our first ever indoor season!  Get excited!

Click here for a map to Cohn from our old playing grounds in front of Outback Steakhouse.

Betty and Steve are caught in a tableau of balletic
beauty in the dim light of the October afternoon.
Ed is ready to roll.
Steve and Ed set up to return to Leo and Ron.
Until Betty and Kathy showed up it was a very
tough two on two.
Kathy seems to be engaged in a martial art exercise
somewhere in the orient in this blurry, but not
uninteresting, frozen moment in time.
Leo and Ron set it up. Ron goes up.
Steve hussles. Ed hussles as Steve sets him up.

October 16

The old facilitator, Richard, was off at Kentucky Lake trying to coax the crappie to bite, so there
are no photos to exhibit.  There were seven valiant athletes to play, however.  Steve, Tom, Ed, Betty,
Kathy, Leo, and Ron.

October 9

A Good Day To Play And Six Who Showed

The clouds rolled in around 4pm and they got heavier and more threatening as it got later.  But the day was
warm and there was little wind, so by 5:30 we had a dedicated crew of six playing and the rain held off until
dark.  Above you see an almost perfect picture of some really dedicated athletes: Ron, Mei, Steve, Ed, Mark,
and Leo.  Richard at the shutter.

We hope some of you no-shows will make an effort to get here next week.  We had some remarkably good volleys with 3 on 3, but 4 on a side is better--it doesn't leave so much real estate open.  Hope to see you then.

Reminder--we'll be signing up players for fall and winter play at the Cohn School Gymnasium next week.   Cost
is $10 each for a full semester of play.  Our playing time will be Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30.   We have scholarship money available if the cost is a problem.  The hard core players above all plan to sign up, but we'll need at least
four to six more to avoid missing a game because of absentees.  So bring your wallet next week and sign up!

Mark, Steve, and Ed made a good team.  Here Ed
makes a big effort and nearly goes down.
On the other side, Ron and Mei watch
Leo's return shot.
Steve and Ed watch Mark make a big save. Mei serenely makes the shot.
Leo and Mei watch as Ron sets it up. Ed and Mark wait for Steve's setup shot.

October 2

The Few, The Proud, The Cold...

The day was not cool--it was cold. and, once again, things were slow getting started.  It takes a real dedication
to the game to show up when the ball is like a rock and every shot stings the hands.  But, Mei, Ron, Leo,
Steve, Tom, and Betty have got what it takes.  And, they said, it wasn't so bad once they got warmed up.
Richard, on the sideline in several layers of coat and sweater, froze as he shot the photos.
Just as we were breaking up the set, Kathy showed up with information that we are all set to play this fall and
winter if we can get up enough interest.  The place is Cohn School Gymnasium.  This is near the Richland Park
Library.  So it's not far from our current location.  Cost is $10 each for a full semester of play.  Our available time
is Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30.   We have scholarship money available if the cost is a problem.  The hard
core players above will surely sign up, but we'll need at least six more to be sure we have enough players to
avoid a game scratched because of absentees.  Think about this.  We'll get back to you soon about signing up.
It could be a good way to keep down the flab during the "off season."

Colleen and Dexter.  They enjoyed the play and
may come back with Dexter's other human, Jason.
Betty never goes half way.
Ron, Mei, and Leo.  "FORE!" Steve, Betty, and Tom were hot (figuratively)
all afternoon..
Leo has been studying Mei's style.  Ron watches. Ron watches Mei who evidently didn't
watch the ball!
Mei gives a pretty smile for the folks back home.
She said it seldom gets below freezing where she
comes from and can often get up to 100 degrees
in the summer.  Sounds like West End in August!
Mei, Ron, and Leo had a hard time handling
the Steve, Betty, and Tom crowd.  They did
finally take the last game.
Steve played one of his best games of the
year.  Maybe he's a cold natured sort.
Tom hauls out to get a hard one.

September 25

Once again, things were slow getting started, but when Kathy and Tom got there the game was on.
Leo has used the equipment for his annual "six hours of drunken mayhem disguised as Volleyball,"
but despite some misplaced stakes and bunge cords we found it all intact, despite Mark's accusations.
Then we got the "Italian Stallion," Gianguido Coffa, who just happened to be passing by (call him
Gian which you pronounce "John" ).  Finally, Denver Bowers, a friend of Ed's rolled in and it was 5/5 of
really good players.
Above are Susan, who helped hold down the sidelines with Richard, Mei, just over a cold but a real
sport, Gian, Leo, Ron, Tom, Denver, Kathy, Mark, Betty, and Ed.
Weather was perfect.  Days getting much shorter now.  But again,  a very pleasant afternoon in a
remarkably dry fall.
Tom, Betty, and Leo. Denver and Ed. (See Who's Who.)
Ron, Mei, Gian, and Tom. Kathy and Mark.
Gian shows he can get up there. (See Who's Who.) Leo pounds one.
Mark gets up and Kathy backs him. Mei shows her pure form for Mark and Gian.
Ron and Mark. Betty watches in awe as Tom shows his paces.

September 18

Eight good players showed up, including Ed Brown, a new recruit who works with Ann Morrison. There were
some dandy games and the level of play was high.  As we feared Peter wasn't able to show  with his bum ankle
and Jeannine stayed away to help him drown his pain.  Those that did make it are Ron, Steve, Betty, Ed, Tom, Richard, Mei, Leo, and Mark.  Photo by lawn ornament supreme, Susan.
Lots of fun and interesting stuff going on, including a return visit by those madcap Red Bull girls, Noelle and Cara, a brief stop by by Allie, who may return to play next week, and a long visit by Jeanne and her pop, Yang.
The days are dwindling down to a precious few, as the song says, so be sure to come on out and join us in this wonderful fall weather next week.  See you at high 5pm!  Be there, or be SQUARE!!!

The Red Bull girls pep up the flagging
athletes.  That's Noelle, left, and Cara making
a ham-on-rye sandwich with Ron.
Susan and Allie helped Richard guard the cooler
and take photos.  Allie's from Indiana and works
at Vandy Hospital.  Hey, single guys!
Ed gets way up there.  He's played this
game before!
Betty and Leo.  Jeanne and pop watch.
Mark levitates. Tom and Mark back up Mei.
Steve. Ed comes up fast to help Ron.
Tom gets high.  Leo and Betty poise for action. Jeanne and Yang.

September 11

Big news of the week was the birth
of baby Elizabeth Frazier Jones
(Ellie) to Chip and Betsy.
Betsy was Ms. Volley 2000 and
for many years one of our most faithful players.  Ellie was pretty
rough on Momma during the pregnancy, so we are all glad to
know that they are both in great shape.  Be sure to send Chip,
Betsy, and Ellie your best wishes
by clicking here.

The Hard Core Hangs In

As you can see we had Leo, Kris, Peter, Ron, Steve, Jeannine, Betty, Kathy, and, of course,
Richard is welding the camera.
Well, these are the last days of Summer and evidently a lot of players have things to do and places to
go.  So it was the hard core of dependable athletes who started today.  Even then we had only seven
players until Kris showed up (he told his wife he was going to the store).  Despite all this the games
were great and the weather was perfect.  A fun incident was the arrival of the Red Bull girls with free
samples of their "energy drink" which was sampled by several of the more energy needy athletes.  A not-fun
incident was the injury to Peter's ankle, which we hope will heal soon.  We were lucky to have two nurses on
hand and Jeannine and Kathy soon had Peter in Steve's comfortable chair with his ankle encased in bags of
the ice thoughtfully provided by Leo.  So make a vow to be on hand next week since we are running out of
battle ready hard core athletes.  Especially if Peter has to sit it out on the side with Richard.  See you then.

Betty takes one over her head and Peter
stand ready to back up.  .
A few of our energy depleted athletes enjoyed a
free "pick up" when the Red Bull Girls arrived.
Betty and Ron. Kris and Kathy.
Kathy, Leo, and Kris. Ron and Jeannine.
Steve. Steve serves a sky ball while Kathy, Kris,
and Leo wait for the return.

September 4

Facilitator Richard off on a trip to a wedding in Ft. Myers, Florida.  So no pics today.  Reports say we
had a light turnout with only seven athletes on hand.  We need YOU to show up in these last good days
of the year.  There won't be any games on Thursday after daylight saving time ends and think how
you'll regret missing out on the ones we have left!  So show up and enjoy this best part of the year.

August 28

Things were slow getting started, but when Tommy and Beth showed up at 5:30 we had enough for four
on a side and some very good games.  It was one long volley after another and close all the way.  Taking
a break from the hot action are Ron, Tommy, Beth, Steve, Betty, Peter, Leo, Susan, and Jeannine.  Photo by
the injured facilitator, Richard.  Susan is on injured reserve as well, so she could enjoy watching with Richard.
All in all a very pleasant afternoon with good friends and healthful exercise.  What else is better?

Steve and Betty. Jeannine.
Steve, Peter, and Tommy. Leo and Jeannine.
Peter and Tommy. Ron and Beth.
Steve. Susan whiles away the time with Richard.

August 21

A very nice gathering on a sultry day.  Beth was back from school in Austria.  Tommy was there. Adam
stopped by looking fat and happy with a mysterious female person.  And the usual suspects filled out the
lineup.  Scrunching down on the left is Leo, then Tommy, Steve, mysterious lady, Adam, Peter, Jeannine,
Tom, Betty, Mei, Kathy, and Beth.  The loyal and true but injured facilitator, Richard, is taking the photos.

Adam Laughbaum showed up with a very
mysterious young lady who claimed to know him.
Very interesting..........!
Beth came back with a vengeance.  Here
she whacks the daylights out of the ball
while Jeannine and Kathy watch in awe.
Jeanne, whose Chinese name is Tiantian, which
means "sweet," came to watch with Pop, Guangyong
Yang, who couldn't play due to his more important job
of baby sitting.
Betty gets high and Steve looks on.
Jeannine gets off a sky ball. Kathy is a blur of speed while Tom
marvels.
Over the head with perfect form--Mei's trademark.
Steve admires from a distance.
Peter and Leo duke it out at the net.
Steve gets one while Mei backs up. Tom beats Kathy to a line drive while
Beth poises to help.
Tommy arches one back over while and
Peter waits.
Beth shows her concentration.

August 14

A fairly slim turnout.  Who knows what happens?  Last week we played 6 and 7 on a side.  This
week we had 7 players--but GOOD ONES!!!  We also had the annual visit by Cherry Manning
who brought an old Methodist Publishing House friend, Charlie McGinnis.  So we had a good time
and got to visit and if you weren't there you missed it.  Shown above are Steve, Charlie, Cherry, Ron,
Peter, Leo, Jeannine, Betty, and Mark.  Richard, the hurt one, is clicking the shot.

Cherry Manning, who is the favorite for
"Worst Attendance" again this year, showed
up to the delight and suprise of one and all.
Betty gets high.
Jeannine and Peter wait while Leo lines one up. Oh, no!
Leo moves out to get Peter's rising shot. Mark moves in a Monet landscape.
Steve gets high while Mark waits for the return
and Ron backs up.
A moment frozen in time.

August 7

A good group showed up and made a pretty photo.  Above are Jeff, Ron, Kathy, Leo, Peter, Tom, Tommy,
Betty, Mei, Mark, and Jeaninne.  Taking a break somewhere is Zhongjun and Richard is clicking the
shutter.  A beautiful day and the great weather continues but, as we know, we'll have to pay for it.  But
probably not for a long time.  Come on out next week and help us enjoy it.  See you then!

Leo waits and Kathy watches as Betty whacks one. The girls showed up in force today--Kathy,
Betty, Mei and Jeannine. .
Betty and Kathy wait and Ron watches as Jeannine puts one up. Jeff goes up and Tom and Betty take notes.
Tommy, Ron, and Betty watch Kathy's style. Leo shows that he has studied Mei's technique.
Betty, Jeff, and Leo mix it up. Mark shows Ron and Jeannine how old timers
do it.
Mei awes Tommy and Mark. The usual suspects go at it.
Tommy goes high for an over the head backwards
shot after which he did a triple flip.
Tom gets high and pounds the net, only it was last
week.  Still, it's a good shot and we needed one
to make things come out right.

July 31

Disaster Strikes!

Yes, disaster struck as the old facilitator collided with Peter and cracked his collarbone in the same place
and within one day of the anniversary of cracking it last year.  He'll be out for the rest of the year, but he is sure
the brave athletes of the APVA will be able to struggle on without him.  Luckily,  just as he had to leave the game,
who should show up but Rajdeep Sengupta who stepped in and filled the spot nicely.  Above we see Rajdeep (Raj),
Peter, Ron, Tom, Steve, Mark, Mei, Jeannine, and Kathy.  Missing are Richard (shooting photo) and Leo, who
was getting a dress out of his car for his sister, Leoitt.  Evidently, none of her own would do for some big date
so Leo kindly lent her one of his.  This is Leiott's first appearance after her big wreck and she says she has
mended nicely.  Nice to see you well, kid.

Darn near everybody in this shot.  Watching the magic
ball are Ron, Mei, Raj, Leo, Tom, and Mark.
Kathy shows Peter and Raj how it's done.
Leiott shows a pretty smile after a near miss of
the grim reaper.  Glad she decided to stay.
Mei shows her usual grace and skill as
Ron takes notes.
New recruit, Raj, showed up in the nick of time. Ron gets high.
Tom goes up for one while Raj and Mark get
ready for the return.
Jeff and Mark at the net.  Last weeks best shot
helps fill out the frame.

July 24

Today was the day Amanda Hamilton (aka Heaven Lee) made her debut.  She did very well for a
person who is certainly in her 70's and maybe more!  Of course, that age is getting to be younger and younger
as I approach it.
We also had an interesting interlude when Daniel Donelson, the mad trail biker, rode onto the court
doing a handstand on the handlebars and whistling a jaunty tune.
Above is the group photo which was not so hot (nevershoot in half sun/half shade.  But a witness to history
was obtained as we see the players of the day starting with Leo, Tom, Jeff, Ron, Jeannine, Peter, Amanda,
Tommy, Steve, Mark, and Ting.  Richard, as usual, was the shooter.  The weather was so nice it made you
wonder when we will have to pay.  Will it hit 100 degrees in December?  Will the earth open and swallow us,
court and all?  Stay tuned...
Amanda got a good start on her first outing.  Here
she shows the form that made her a living legend
during her golden days as Heaven Lee on Printer's
Alley.
Putting in a spectacular first appearance is prospect
Daniel Donelson on his faithful bike Tonto.
Mark reaches for one while Amanda, Ting, and
Peter just hope and pray he knows what he's doing.
Peter, Amanda, and Mark wait for a sign from the sky.
Tommy goes up while Mark, and Jeff wait for it. Tom whacks one while Jeannine, Ron, Tommy,
and Amanda watch in awe.
Mark goes high against Jeff while Tom
bites his lip in anxiety.
Steve gets one over to Peter and Jerry as Tommy
waits in reserve.  Yes, this was from last week, but
I needed one to fill out the frame!

July 17

The game following our big exposure on Channel 2 Weather was great.  All the usual suspects plus one
absentee (Tommy) and one new kid (Jerry).  Spirited games, good weather, and a fine gathering of folks.  What
more could one want?  Posing above are Steve, Tommy, Peter, Ron, Jerry, Gan, Zhongjun, Jeannine, Mei,
Mark, Kathy, and Leo.  Richard, the facilitator, is the shutterbug.
One fun thing that didn't get photographed was a pregame visit by my former Pilates teacher, McLean
McGowan, who lives nearby.  She says she may become an actual player since her Thursday afternoons will
be free very soon.  She brought her tiny Pomeranian, Poo Poo, who immediately added his bit to the Acklen
Park fertilizer pool.  He's so cute!
Tommy shows us what jumping is all about. In a rare public appearance, Ann Morrison came to cheer
on the athletes and give Richard the dirt on some of Mark's
more bizarre personal habits!
Jeff slips the surly bonds of earth. Jeff sets to Jerry who sets to spike one
to Tommy, who waits like a jungle cat.
Jerry shows some bounce while Gan
and Mark giggle.
Tommy goes high to block Ron's shot
while Kathy comes up in support.
Mark goes high while Tommy, Steve,
and Leo wait in anguished tension.
Steve gets one over to Peter and Jerry as Tommy
waits in reserve.
Abby and Jeannine unsheath the ivories. Tommy clowns with the official vampire
stake pounding mallet.

July 10

It rained around 2pm, but by 5 o'clock the field of play was excellent.  Oh, there were banks of black cloud blowing by, but our luck held and we had a great day for play.  Above in their sweat stained glory are Zhongjun, Peter, Jeannine whispering secrets to Leo, Ting, Jeff, Gan Ding, Steve, Mark, Kathy, and Ron.  Facilitator
Richard wields the mighty Polaroid!
Big event of the day! Channel 2 cameraman stopped off and taped the play.  It appeared as a little snippet on
the 10pm weather.  No, it's not the big time--YET!  But wait until the cable talent scouts start calling for the
newest new thing--THE APVA REALITY SHOW!!!
Giving it his all for the Channel 2 boys, Ron flys high
while Gan, Jeannine, and Zhongjun play backup.
Ting watches as Kathy gets ready to take
the challenge.
Ting gets the serve while Mark and Kathy stare. Zhongjun takes a high one while Jeff,
Kathy, and Peter crouch in readiness.
Leo launches a missile while Jeannine and Gan
think seriously about just why they are doing this.
Ron, the levitating songster, whacks one
back to Kathy.

July 3

The big July 3rd Game was a first--we played three teams!  There were the five young athletes brought by
Becky Heywood, who is regional co-ordinator for AFS Intercultural Programs, a student exchange vehicle,
Becky herself, and Jack West, one of the exchange program parents, so three teams it had to be.  To keep
things circulating, the rules were that a team sat down after two wins and had to keep the downhill side if they won the first game there.  This meant that everyone got to play and everyone got a breather on the sidelines.
With all the visitors and a few  whose names we don't yet know well, you'll have to be kind and overlook a few
mistakes in naming.  If you see an error, send me an  E-MAIL  so it can be fixed.
Above we have Xuping, Dong, Ron, Jack, Mark, Kathy, Ting, Jeff,  Leo, Becky, Zhongjun,  Florian Ladage (Germany), Joao Chaves (Brazil), Markus Anstock (Germany), Nunu Busayapong (Thailand), Cecile Aquilanti (France), and Steve.  Richard is taking the photo.   And there are probably others hanging back through a certain modesty.  A fine big turnout on a suitably sweltering prelude to a blazing fourth of July.
By the way, if you want to know more about the AFS program or about sponsoring a student, call Becky at
615 473-4389 or visit the regional web site at http://misstennky.org

Five exchange students came to play and play
they did.  Joao, Markus, Florian, Cecile, Richard,
and Nunu.  Come back soon!
Cecile gets an over-the-head back-to-the-net
shot while Becky looks on.
Nunu,  Florian, Markus, and Joao rest up for the next game while Becky's sister, Daryl Townsley (Topfield, MA) and
Mom, Betty Trogdon, critique the action.
Zhongun, Becky, Leo, Dong, and Jack marvel
as old timer Steve, floats like a butterfly..
Steve is at it again! Abby and Maggy Morrison ride the Catfish
and smile prettily.
Daryl and Becky--another set of sisters.  They did
not, however, ride the catfish.
Daryl,  Becky, and Joao pose with Betty.  Notice the family resemblance.

June 26

The gathering was good despite the threat of rain.  We had a new player show up and both Susan and
Richard, lawn ornaments supreme, played.  Adam, Steve's son is back from San Francisco and put a little
West Coast spin on the ball.  Dong and Gan were back and added a little class to the situation.  Above we
have Zhongun, Ron, Dong, Steve, Peter, Jeff, Jeannine, Mei, Gan, Adam, Mark, and Susan.  Richard is
wielding the mighty Polaroid.
New Player Wenquang Xu hit some pretty
good volley today.  Come back soon!
Dong gets up there!  Zhongun and Susan marvel.
Zhongun flied high and Mark backs up. Peter and Zhongun, who was all over the court.
Mei shows off her pretty new shirt. Dong shows his ivories.
Gan Deng is ready for anything! Adam assumes a classic stance.

June 19

Another big turn-out and we almost had enough for 3 teams.  Maybe next week.  Shown here are Zhongun,
Ting, Betty , Ron, Tom, Jeannine, Peter, Mei, Mark, Jeff, Susan, and Leo.  Richard shooting the pic.   Later
Dong arrived and the group was complete, except for Dawn, who brought her grandparents to watch.  She
enjoyed watching the see-saw matches (the downhill team always losing) until finally, on the last game,
the curse was broken and the downhillers emerged victorious and hot.  First real summer weather of the
year after all the rain and cold.  Next week summer will officially be here and the action will be red hot!
See you then!
Zhongjun and Dong. Ting, Betty, and Tom clown it up.
Jeff explains a fine point to Mark and Leo. Peter wants to boogie, but Jeannine
can't see it.
Ron watches Mei watch the birdie. Official Lawn Ornament, Susan, does
her stuff.
Richard gets to visit Dawn and grandmom. Grandmom and grandpop smile for a shot
with Dawn.  Mom Connie was home cooking.

June 12

Lots of new faces showed up today.  Above we have Ting, Tom, Tommy, Ron, Mark, Zhongjun, Mei, Betty,
Leo, and Beth.  Richard is shooting the pretty photo.   Beth and Tommy are newcomers from the neighborhood.  Ting has been to several games, but I've only now (I hope) got his name straight.  Xuping Wang came--he'd
been once before with his lovely wife, Shaojun.  In addition, we had other newcomers who showed up after the
group shot--Gan Deng and Dong Chen, two Italian students at Vandy.  Yuk!  That was a joke.  No, they are two Chinese who heard about us from Mei.  Well, no matter how people hear, we are always glad to have new blood, since us older players wear out and have to be replaced from time to time.  If things go as they have for the last
two weeks we may want to try a three team system where the winner gets to play again and the loser sits one out and challenges the next game.  We will see.  In the meantime, it's great to have such a fine turnout.  Only those
of us who have showed up and tried to play with two or three on a side can appreciate just how nice this is.
Right, Steve?
Beth shows her form as Ron and Leo watch. Beth and Ron wait for the ball coming from
Ting and Betty.
Betty, Tom, and Ting at the net. Xuping and Ron set for the return.
Leo and Tommy high at the net with Xuping
backing up.
Mark, Tom, Ting, Tommy and Betty.
Ting waits for Mark's shot. Beth's service packs a mighty punch!

June 5

The turnout was fine.  Weather perfect.  Old friends showed up and new ones appeared.  The group photo
shows us Steve, Ron, Kathy, Susan, Kris, Tom, Peter, Zhongjon, (Ching? please correct us) Lee, Leo,
Jeannine, and Betty.  Richard at the camera.  By the way, the photos are much better than this.  I just
processed them the wrong way and don't have time to do it over.  Better next time.
.
Steve, Kris, Lee, Zhongjon, and Peter. Tom, Kris, and Steve
(?) Lee whacks a serve. Tom, Betty, Leo, Zhongjun, and Kathy.
Peter, Kris, Steve, and Jeannine. Richard, Peter, Ron, and Betty.

May 29

The weather was extremely fine and the turnout was great.  Above is our new informal group photo mode.  Posing
casually in the cool of the afternoon are Jeff, Mark, Mei, Leo, Tom, Ron, Tim, Betty, Jeannine, and Peter.  Melissa left a little early so she missed her moment of fame.  Photo by Richard.
Betty gets up, up, and away! Tom and Jeff watch Leo's shot.
Tim watches Mark's get. Mei takes a break.
Mei is grace in motion as Tom and Ron watch. Tim shoots Richard, the old facilitator, as he
shoots the hot action from the sidelines.
Ron gets high. Tim fires back as Jeannine and Peter watch.

(Great Games--facilitator out--no photos)

May 8

The group shot came out 100% smiles!  A miracle.  Thanks to kindly Kathy, the old facilitator--like Father Time
in his grey beard--was able to get shot.  Good show up with Steve, Richard, Ron, Leo, Jeff, Mei, Jeannine, Betty,
Melissa, Mark, Peter and, of course, Kathy.
Melissa give it her all and Steves moves to take advantage. Barefoot Jeff (it reminds him of his native
town) puts one over to Mei and Steve while
Mark looks on in wonder and awe.
Jeff serves up a mighty shot. Leo picks one off the net and Ron waits his
turn to.......what?
Always the class of the show, Mei delivers
a graceful serve.
Steve learns a lesson in smooth and effective
motion as he studies Mei's form.
Betty puts one over to Melissa with
Peter, Leo, and Ron standing around
thinking deep thoughts.
Mark sets for the shot while Ms. Volley
and Mr. Eveready surround him with celebrity.
Mr. Eveready 2002 whacks the ball to
Mr. Eveready 2001. Will he be
ready still?
Ron is caught in a very nice moment of time.
Steve shows he hasn't given up
thoughts of winning the Peacock
Award  currently held by Zhongjun.
Mei isdazzled by his fine feathers.
Not playing today, but helping the old facilitator
by shooting some mighty fine photos, Kathy will
be back in action next week.

May 1
Rained Out!

April 24

We had a good turnout on a gloomy day.  Back from last year, Yong showed up for the first time as did Betty.  Newcomers Shaojun and Wang made it six on a side with one left over to sit and sip and snap photos.  We got
an 83.33% smile ratio on the group pic, so what more could one ask?  Don't miss the fun.  Plan to be there next week--May Day!
Betty's 2003 debut was spectacular!  She was
all over the court.  Here she whacks one over
to Mei.
Newcomer Shaojun moves to position herself as
Kathy plans to back her up.
Wang's service form shows that he may be new
to the APVA, but he's done this before.
Mei's played a good solid game.  Here she recovers
her stance after a whistling serve.
Yong gets one with Shaojun backing up and Betty
ready to receive.
Steve whacks the ball fiercely to Leo's amazement!
He is mainly amazed to find a photo from last year
stuck in to balance the frame!

April 17
Opening Game

We tried to play April 10th, first Thursday after daylight saving time kicked in, but cold weather and a wet field
from rains earlier in the day put the K-O to that.  But today was fine and we got a good turnout for the games and
the delayed presentation of the Ms. Volley and Mr. Eveready awards to Jeannine and Peter.  Melissa showed up late with a certain Mr. X and Jeff, though late, made it too.  All in all--a good solid start to the new season.

The motley crew (less photographer Richard and late showing Jeff).  The usual suspects: Melissa, Tom, Ron,
Leo, Susan, Steve, Mei, Peter and Jeannine with their awards, and Mark.
Mark shoots while Richard, Mei, and Leo
stand by to help.
Steve really gets up!  Ron, Jeannine, and Melissa
stand frozen in amazement.
Hot action at the net. Jeannine charges the net and Ron backs her up.
Since she and Peter missed the banquet, they got
their awards at the game.  Here Susan presents
the Ms. Volley 2002 to Jeannine.
