Who's Who?
Acklen Park Volleyball Association Hall of Fame

Earliest known group photo.  Probably 1994.
Well, when we started playing everyone knew everyone else, so we didn't need this.  but we'venow been up and running since 1994 and I can't name more than half of the above group. Some of us have moved off and new players have come and gone.  So a list to remind us of who is who is helpful.  We're only listing folks who now play or who played in the past.  If you aren't listed and want to be--Click Here!  to let me know.
Be sure to check your photo and bio material and squawk if corrections need to be made.  Players are arranged alphabetically by first name.

Abby Morrison

"I am young, but soon I will be older and then
I will be able to play.  No doubt I shall excell.
I shall remain modest, however.  No matter how
high I climb I will remember the little people
who helped make it possible."

Photo--Abby with Jeannine smiling prettily.

Adam Laughbaum

"I am heterosexual and enjoy good clean fun."

Alice Forrester

"I came, I saw, I played."

             (Does this reflect her politics?)

Amanda Hamilton

"I freely admit I am in my 70's because my beauty
if deep within and because I have spent a
blooming fortune on this make over and want people to know it!  Yes, I miss the glamour of show biz, but my chalet in Switzerland is nice and my 13 young lovers keep me busy, so I don't
have time to be bored.  I love this APVA!  It is just the sort of lower level of sport and society
that I enjoy most.  I'm planning to invite you all to my spa this winter for a month of energizing and healthful down time.  Ta Ta."

Ann Morrison

"I hate photos.  I hate you.  Go to hell!"

Becky and Rob Heywood

Cherri Manning

"I'm single (been looking for Mr. Right for 10 years but haven't found him).  I work in Human Resources.  Love to dance, the lake, and puppy
dogs & expect to attend my "once a year" volley ball game soon - but probably not tomorrow as I'm helping my daughter move."

Cindy Axford

"I played for years and ended up with a
bum knee.  Then I became chief lawn
ornament and ended up with a beer gut.
I think volleyball has, over all, been a
damn bummer for me!"

Cindy Enochs

James Nichols

"I will probably never be back, so why bother
with a bio?"

Jamie (Jian Yong)

"I play hard and enjoy it a lot."

Janet Nielsen

"Volleyball is a game of mistakes, if no
one made mistakes the rallies would go on
forever. Learn from the mistakes of others
because you can't live long enough to make
them all yourself!"

Photo--Janet is second from the left in back.

Jeannine Hopson

"I'm originally from Johnson City in East Tennessee, but I wound up in Nashville following my military career ex.  I'm a registered nurse and have been working at the Frist Clinic at Centennial Medical Center for the past 12 years.  My real passion is travel, and do it every chance I get.
My next most favorite things are basket making and running.  I live in Franklin. Well, that's all folks.  I surely enjoy volleyball.  It's a great
group of people to know."

Photo--Jeannine and Susan.

Jeff Kastner

"I came to Nashville from Milan, in West
Tennessee, where the cotton grows.  I notice
that the cotton doesn't grow here.  I find
this odd, but am willing to accept the fact.
Thank you for your time and attention."

Photo--Abby and Jeff.

Jerri and George Allaster

"We played hard and we drank hard.  Now we
hardly play at all.  We still drink, however."

I guess I'll do something else."

never be equalled and certainly never excelled."

John Weakley
Judie Bell

Since moving to Nashville in 1993, Judy has taken advantage of many performing opportunities. She has been the Featured Artist at a weekly show
at the Music City Café for 2 years, has toured with a high-society 11 piece orchestra playing events like The Kentucky Derby Governor's Ball, was a
regular at Gibson Guitar Café located on Nashville's tourist strip, and now calls 3rd & Lindsey her band's home. All of this, combined with monthly trips to Los Angeles, has shaped and developed the energy and performance that Judie is known for.  What makes Judie happy? "Everything, but it's my family and friends that
allow me to be that way. That's what life is all about - love and good friends."

Kathy Graves

"I feel a little out of place on this court, since
most of the players are pretty slow and old.  Yet
there is something to be gained in any contest.
I play to show others the way to perfection."

Kerry Wallace
Kris Griffin

"I used to play when I was able.  Now that
I have the time I've decided it's not worth it."

Larry Leahy
Leiott Smiley

"You people are mildly amusing."

Leo Smiley

"The secret is in the spin."

Leslie and Mollie Mitchell

Leslie and Mollie like to watch the "funny
people," as Mollie says.  They are from Vancouver Island in Canada and are adjusting to the funny American ways.

Linda Leaming Thimphu
(Linda was one of the earliest players.  She made a trip to
Bhutan and ended up marrying Phurba Namgay Thimphu
and staying there.  We asked her about early days of APVA.)

We began to play in 1994--intermittently. Richard
would call everybody.  Then 1995 we started playing
with some regularity. I hardly remember anybody who played with us. There was Steve, you, a large man who was a broker with you -- Bob Durham played once or
twice. Some ladies I can't remember. We were all so young and impressionable and athletically gifted.
That's how I remember it anyway.   Actually we couldn't play volleyball worth cow flop.  But we had fun. I am fine. Was briefly in Nashville this summer. Sorry I
didn't get a chance to say hi in person. There are so
many people I missed seeing; we were in and out in
a few days seeing family. It's nice to be back here. Life
is slow. The peach trees are blooming.  I am writing a lot-- trying to publish some. I have a bunch of little stories Postcards from Bhutan. Some are out getting rejected or accepted. Should I send one or two?

Lisa, Elizabeth, and Mark Aune

Lori Morris-Beecroft

over 30.  Including Pop."

Photo--Maggy (front) with sister, Abby.

Mark Morrison

"Well................(several pages edited out)....
So, that's all I've got to say."

Martha Burk

Martha is Betty's sister.  The 14th of 15 children.  She recently lost a ton (80 lbs.) and walks, hikes, runs, and plays volleyball.  Her next project is to get her husband off the couch and into the program.  Good luck!

Mary Jane Brown
Mary Lawson

"I believe that art lies in all things done well."

Mei Hu

is seeing this.  If so I want to say 'Hello, from
Nashville, Tennessee.'  I love you and look
forward to seeing you."

Mei became our 6th Ms. Volley at the annual awards
banquet on April 2, 2004.

We are sorry to say that she will be leaving us to
return to her family in China in May.  We will
miss her.

are now being used to plan for a wedding...my wedding.  I'm getting married October 25.
Hope you are all having fun.""

Rajdeep Sengupta

"I played for one afternoon and quickly
decided there was no future in it."

Richard Loller

"Sometime back in 1993 or 1994 I persuaded my boss, Bren Finucane, that Smith Barney needed
volleyball gear so we could challenge other
brokers to games.  Not long after that my good friend Steve Laughbaum, who is an artist,  joined in and between the two of us we kept things going even when the brokers lost interest and we had only 2 or 3 show up for games.  I remember
many times when it was just me, Steve, and
Betsy.  I used to bring horse shoes in case we lacked enough bodies for anything else.  Steve would bring Bocci balls.  Now, of course, we
have a fine turnout and seem to pick up new players as old timers drop out.  It's a fine group and good fun and there's no reason why the younger players shouldn't keep things going when the old timers kick off.  No question.  You will!"

"the extraordinary works of 'ordinary' people.

Richard Rice

"I forgot what the subject was...give me a hint!"

Richard Loller.

Rob Sanders

"I grew up and moved on."

Rod and Wendy Glover
Ron Beam

"Volleyball is my muse.  Unfortunately, there
aren't too many songs you can work it into.
Still, I think it may one day be the key to my
next hit single."

Ron became our 5th Mr. Eveready at the awards
banquet on April 2, 2004.  Here he accepts the
suitably veiled award from young Miss Abbie.

Sarah Alderwick

"Actually, I'm in New Zealand and we can't play
here because there isn't room for a court and
if the ball goes out of bounds it floats off to
Australia or some awful place such as that.
Hello to all my Nashville volleyball friends.
Miss you!"

Sefa Kelekei

Sefa was a walk-on June 17, 2004.  Next time he
plans to come in more comfortable dress.

Shaojun Mei

"I came once and found the competition rather
slow.  Maybe I'll be back.  Maybe not.  The
ying or the yang will move me."

Photo--Shaojun and Kathy.

Shelly Patterson

"I was a legend on the field, but I'm now pursuing Motherhood and a degree in Rocket Science.
Little time for volleyball (dare not risk injury
to such a valuable cranium)."

Photo--Nick and Shelly.

Sherry Loller

"I am extremely gifted in many sports, but
volleyball isn't one of them.  Besides, I let
you use my husband and he stays bummed up.
So I should play?  You are not serious."

Photo--Abby and Sherry.

Steve Goobic

Rides his bike through rush hour traffic from the wilds of East Nashville to get to the game.  That is dedication.

Steve Laughbaum
"After ten seasons, it is always interesting to
see who comes back each  year to play.  I'm amazed that some of us are still at it, especially me.  We have a diverse group and it is fantastic getting to meet and play with  all of them. Thanks everybody !!! . . . ( or should I tell some true stuff? )"

Steve was awarded a brand new trophy at the
awards banquet on April 2, 2004--The Hammer.
It means just what it seems to mean!

trying to print out her photo."

APVA crowd for obvious reasons.  Go, you Tom!
