Greetings,

Enjoyed looking at this Web Page! I have it bookmarked. Sorry, I was
not aware of this page sooner. I see you did have a link from Jim
Zorman. I would very much like to get in touch with my friend if anyone
knows his email address. He and I served at NavRadSta during '66-'67
and he was a genius with a camera. I have a web site with pictures
from a band I played in that Jim took for us. "Opium Trail" if any of
you remember that '60s group from Thurso you might enjoy seeing some of
these pictures.RGC Graphics

Hello
I went to Thurso to the reunion that not many people showed up. The
ones that were there really had a grand visit. It was really good to
see the place again and when I went up to John Kennedy Drive I could
hardly recognize the place. When we lived there it was the end of the
street and the field on 2 sides is no longer a field but houses. They
have changed the siding and remodeled them also. Saw some very dear
friends there. Wish more people could have attended. Maybe we can
meet again in the states if enough people are interested.

Don K. Hogan 30/Jul/2000:15:25:53
I wish I had known about this site long long before now. I was
stationed there twice. I met my supervisor cum wife RM2 Purcell now
hogan and have been happily married ever since. I am retired now and
working at Intel. We hope everyone having a great time at the reunion
had I known about the reunion sooner, Donna and I would have hocked the
house to get there. We were both stationed there twice. Donna from
April 1983 to October 1984. Myself from April 1984 to October 1985. We
came back in June of 1988 and left again in June of 1991. You have no
idea how our hearts were crushed to find out that there wasn't going to
be a third tour. We absolutely loved the place and we will go back
eventually. Names: Nolan Hill (my barraks room mate) Dan Hackbarth
Dallas Mackenzie, Tina Lawrence/Gavreau, Toby Swain, Faye Drake, Laurie
Lockhart, Here's a name down memory Lane Marlin from the club Aeolus
and her famous Wednesday Chili day. Randal Davis. Carl White, ET2

Hello every one.
Wish we could be there to see everyone this year. bad health prevents
this.
Do not forget J . ROBINSON who worked the antenna fields in 1963
when there was just grass and stones at the site. I have a list a
mile long of names but do wish i could pass the word to others .
We'll meet again ,don't know where don't know when. sfh

Hello to all. As a Seabee, I was stationed at Thurso from '84-'86 in
Public Works. I worked with a great guy named Hugh Mackay and many
other great people including Dan Allen, Abby Paterson, Sandy Macdonald
(piped the cake in at many Seabee Balls), Alex Murray, Nonnie Campbell,
the late John Jack. Enjoyed two very memorable years living on a farm
in Scotscalder. In fact, my wife still writes to Mrs. Helen Black and
her family who own the farm called Tongside. We fondly remember
learning Scottish Dancing in the club. Our oldest child was born at
Dunbar Hospital, before the maternity ward was moved to the hospital in
Wick. To remember his heritage, he was given the name Graeme Scot. I
played football in the pub league on the American/RAF team. In two
years, I think we won once! If anybody remembers us, please drop us a
line. I think the idea of a reunion is great but would be unable to
attend this year. Thanks to the creators of this message board.

Hello One and All...
Nice to see so many others who have been able to
experience "Thurso". Of all the place I have been in this great world,
Thurso has the greatest place in my heart! Kudos to the WebMaster for
this page.
I was in Thurso from 91-Close :-( , Lance Arthor and I had a house
( cottage) out in Carsgoe. Oh what time we had in "The New Market!"
Listening to Howling gales play... and having a pint..or two.

Im out of the Navy now, living in Michigan with my wife (Audrey
Anne (from the Outer Hebridies - Ben Becula) we have been over to the
UK but have not made it up to Thurso.
Audrey and I are meeting Bunker -&- Catriona Hill, and Tony -&- Effie
Breeden this Memorial day weekend.

Well, please drop a line...

John Kelley (ET-type)

Cheers !

John Moore 18/May/2000:03:42:18
Good to hear from y'all. Hopefully I will be able to carve out the time
to update the web page--and change the music--but until then please
continue to use the guestbook and spread the word.

We are going to have an event of some sort and some size this July. I
personally think we will have to "grow" the thing over the next several
years...so, if you can't make this time don't sweat it 'cos WE WILL DO
IT AGAIN.

All the best to all who served in Caithness from Cedar Hill, TX

Drew Colty 18/May/2000:01:34:17
Hi Everyone, I was staioned at Thurso from 1974 to 1978 and was part of
the elite group that was stationed at thurso in 3 of its incarnations,
Radio Station, Comm-unit, and Comsta. I dont think I will be able to
make the reunion in July but I certainly wish I could. It would be nice
to hear from any of you that care to write to me.

Ron Ronniger 16/May/2000:23:01:11
It would seem that the reunion has come to a halt. Over a year ago it
seemed like a great idea. There are some of us that have made plans and
will be there. I would like to recommend that those of us that will be
in Thurso during the proposed time period get together, to at least have
a few sociable drinks, talk over old times, and see what develops.
Towards that end I would like to recommend that we meet in the Pentland
on the 17th of July at 1900.
Maureen and I will be there, hopefully others will also.
Ron

Former pupils at Thurso High School are regularly holding reunions
(usually 40th birthday). Lots of service personnel had kids who were
at the school back then. I am trying to trace 2 in particular - James
Merrihew and Paul Dillon both started in 1974. Anyone knows of them or
their parents - let them know we'd love to see them in 2002.
Thanks and best wishes - hope you have a great reunion.

Mark -&- Sara Whitten 11/May/2000:15:07:29

Al.

Jon-Scott -&- Jenny Al 10/Feb/2000:03:01:00
Wow, what a surprise to find this page! Jon-Scott was stationed as an
ET at NavCommStaUK from 1998 to 1991. What a blast! We were a part of
the Blue Monday group - Scott played in the blues band and I (Jenny)
sang in Hi Stakes. The scenery was unforgettable, the music was great,
the natives were warm and generous with the lager. Who could ask for
more?

We lived at 19 JFK - neighbors were the Geitners (are you out there?)
The Toutants, the Gruvers, and so many more - I'd have to spend some
time with the photo albums to name all the wonderful people.

Any more members of Hi Stakes or the Blue Monday Society out there?
Also any Reay Primary School students - and teachers Eileen Sutherland
or Leslie Mackay. We're visiting in August and would love to see
you!

David -&- Kate Coleman 06/Feb/2000:02:02:20
My good friends Harry and Mari Dale clued me in on this. I was the last
CO of the station and my most treasured possesion is the last US Flag
to fly over the base.

A lot of names recognized, some from personal knowledge and others from
hearing Harry and Mari's tales. If we are not able to make it have a
great party and best to all!

Margaret Hammerton 28/Jan/2000:19:34:01
I was delighted to find (through a friend Jean Lipa) the web page for
the 'Thurso Reunion 2000'. I didn't really have any contact with the
Base although I have known many people connected to it. The Decca's ,
Blaniks,(excuse spelling if it's wrong) Lugo's to name but a few. What
has happened to these people? I would love to contact them especially
the Lugo's, Carmen and Louis, we had their son Calvin in our family (my
daughter Diane was their childminder) from when he was four weeks old
'till he was eighteen months old. Best of all though I saw the name of
my second cousin Diane Williams married to Ken, written in the guest
book. I would love to get their e.mail address.

My address is m_hammerton@talk21.com.

Thurso will be buzzing when you all descend in July!!! We have missed
you all!

Regards Margaret

I still remember the good times but the names have failed me. Would be

Dear Friends, I have really enjoyed hearing from so many old friends.
Thanks for reliving some of my greatest and fondest memories. My wife,
Diane andI plan on being at the reunion and look forward to seeing you
there. I was there from September 71 thru April 74. Does anyone know
how to find SK1 A.B.(Andy) Andres, Terry and girls from that same time
period? Regards to all!

Mike and Stefanie Hi 26/Sep/1999:05:55:35
I don't recognize many names in the guest-book. I reported to Thurso
in 1989...And met my wife Stefanie (Wolfe) in 1990. We're still
together and have 2 girls. I'm still in the Navy and stationed in
Cutler maine. We would love to attend the reunion. Our oldest girl
was born in Wick.

Leon Anderson 24/Sep/1999:14:25:46
Great site. Think I signed on the message board a while back but here
it is again. Was in Thurso from 67 to 70. God willing my wife Jean -&- I
do plan to attend.

John Moore 20/Sep/1999:18:47:21
Welcome aboard all hands! I am excited about the possibilities for our
reunion--obviously the more the merrier! We've got to nail down the
date however, so please go to Steve Caldwell's site (see the link to
"The Sacman's Page" on this site's main page) and take his survey. I
plan to pulse Steve on October 1 to see what the survey says. By the
way, if anyone has any connections with USN Public Relations I think
there is a story here for them and, possibly, UK MOD or even local
government agencies in Scotland...? Now, if someone would just pick up
that baton and run with it...

Regards, J.I. Moore, Webmaster

Walt -&- Lynn Kearns 20/Sep/1999:03:03:03
My wife and I are certainly interested in joining the reunion if you'll
have an old CO (3/76 - 10/77)

Steve Allen 17/Sep/1999:14:37:07
I was located by a old sailor that was stationed with me in Thurso.
Boy, was it good to hear from someone from a great part of my past.
Looking forward to talking to more of my old mates. I was there from 71-
74.

William Endres (ET1) 11/Sep/1999:01:52:36
Hi All...

I still miss Thurso after all these years!
I was there Sept 74 to nov 76 I think. How is Jerry Phares, Marv Clamp,
and Frank Casson doing?

M-&-M Clamp 30/Aug/1999:07:52:26
John, I do think that you should trash the Message Board and keep the
guestbook - it's pretty straight forward, etc.
The compilation of names/dates for different periods would be nice to
have - can you fix me up with 63-67 and 75-79?
Rgds,

Donald MacIver 26/Aug/1999:02:06:47
HI EVERYONE WHO WAS STATIONED AT US NAVAL COMMUNCATIONS
STATION, THURSO SCOTLAND UK. I WAS THERE FROM NOVEMBER 82 UNTIL 86.
RMSA TO RM2 WORKED AT THE TRANSMITTER DECK AND MESSAGE CENTER.
ENJOYED THE TOUR OF DUTY IN SCOTLAND. A MEMORY IN MY LIFE I HAVE NEVER
FORGOTTEN. WORKED WITH A BUNCH OF GREAT GUYS. NEVER THOUGHT THEY
WOULD CLOSE IT DOWN. IF ANYONE REMEMBERS ME, DROP A LINE AT MY E-MAIL
ADDRESS. I WON'T BE ABLE TO MAKE THE REUNION BUT EVERYONE HAVE FUN
AND PARTY.

Mary MacIver (Allan_ 25/Aug/1999:02:28:12
I was disappointed not to see my name on your list of civillian
employees. I worked with Moyra, Trish, June, Jim etc. from 1979 - 1984
when I married and eventually transferred to Norfolk in 1986. Another
name was Anne Anderson, she was in the fiscal office as well although
she has since passed away. Donald, Neal, Scott and myself are now
living near Lynchburg, VA where Donald is a Systems Support Engineer
and I am Director of Student Services for a private college. I have
recently been home to Thurso and I spent almost a year there while
Donald was in the middle east and I was surprised to see that although
it is now very quiet, Thurso has not changed much. I hope to hear from
any others that remember me and RM3 MacIver as he was then.

Stationed at Thurso from 1965 - 1967. I was an ET2, when I left, who
worked in the transmitter building. Shared a room with Tony Nardone,
Jack Ennis, and Moon Mullins (Where are you Moon?). Saw Nardone last
spring, got E-mail from Jake Ennis, but Moon your lost. Retired from
the Navy in 1986. Went back to Thurso in September 1998. Brasses Chip
Shop in gone (disaster after traveling 3000 miles for a bag of chips).
Took time to drive by Merkle and walk around the base at Forss (outside
of the fence). The copper is gone from the Helix house (no surprise),
the antennas were sawed off at the base but you can easily see where
they were. The door was hanging off the helix house, but the rest of the
buildings were intact. We should try to have the gates open so those at
the reunion can walk around the buildings. I had forgotten how
beautiful Scotland and Thurso was. Quite a nostalgic trip that brought
back many memories of GREAT TIMES. Even ran into Sybil Moore, on the
corner at the

Kudos on this great site, I'm sure a lot of work goes into starting and
maintaining a site like this.
I was stationed in Thurso April 68 through December 69. Still have lots
of "outlaws" living there.
Currently living in Maryland.
Hope to make the reunion.

Webmaster 05/Aug/1999:19:06:28
Again I'm delighted to see growing utilization of the web site. My
apologies to all for the lack of updating. I launched the site while
in Thurso earlier this year and am now back in Texas so I've been
unable to maintain the site...until now. I've made arrangements to
maintain the pages from here in Cedar Hill and will begin doing so by
the first of September; so keep returning.

Meanwhile, another issue I need help on: some of you are using the
guestbook and some the message board...it occurs to me that perhaps I
ought to do away with one so there's only one communications medium.
Thus, I have three questions: (a) should there only be one means of
communicating (either the guestbook OR the message board); (b) which
one do you prefer; and (c) does anyone know of a better version than
these two--that is the guestbook and message board I'm using?

Regards,

John Moore

I was a Royal Air Force corporal working 'on loan' to the USN at
Murkle satcom site, Thurso, from 1980 to 1985 with a group of 12 RAF
guys. I and my wife, Alison would love to hear from any old friends,

one week bed -&- breakfast with Frank -&- Sheila Sinclair of Murkle. It was
the same place I stayed in 1980. I have thoughts of attending the

John Moore 19/Jul/1999:01:28:24
Good to hear from all you folks...now, would anyone from a particular
time period like to volunteer to be the point-of-contact for people
stationed at Thurso during that particular period? What I mean is, if
you were at the base, say from '70-'72, you would probably have a list
of those you served with and could help us a lot by seeking them out
via the various internet search engines. Anyone interested should
contact me at my email address here in Cedar Hill, Texas (it's a suburb
of Dallas).

Hope the music isn't getting annoying--I set it up to only play once--I
will change it next time I get a chance. It's complex attempting to
maintain a website in the UK remote from the USA.

Hey Marv...email sent to the address you left in this guestbook keeps
gettin's kicked back to me...have you got another?

I'm glad to see there is some thought going to having some sort of
reunion! I was stationed there from Jul90-Jun92 as an ET working on
the SATCOM terminal at Murkle. I spent a year down at Edzell from
Jun92-Jul93 before going back to VA. I got out of the Navy in Feb96
and I must say that the three years in Scotland were the best of the
eight I did.

Has anyone come across any other web sites dedicated the old base?
Here is one for NSGA Edzell http://ivycom.com/edzell/

I've been working in Atlanta since I left the Navy and Becky and I have
added another son to the brood!

If anyone remembers me or is in contact w/ anyone else who was
stationed there between 90-93 please contact me. Especially, Rich and
Donna McBroom or Kirk and Tiara Sommer!

A great B-&-B to use, if it's still open, is Pathecia's at 3 Janet st.
It was owned by Hector and Patricia Polson. They were wonderful people
and really made I feel welcom when we first moved over. We stayed
there the last few days b

John Moore? The name rings a bell but I can't put a face to it?
My good friend Jeannie Blunk put me onto this cite and it is so neat
to see names, which trigger some memories of those good ole days
(63-67 and 75-79). And, lots of fun days with Chuck Miller during
my tour at NPM (71-75). Gads, this is neat!
The reunion is PRI-1 in our household. My wife Marion (Mach II version)
is almost excited as I am about this. We definitely plan on being there.
Let me hear from you guys! Don't give me this QRL stuff or that
things are QRM or QRN5! And, I won't accept a ZBM2 for your inability
to email me at nawthun@juno.com or mclamp9133@aol.com
Tks John, this cite is really something and I will be checking in
from time to time to see who shows up and whats happening, etc.

It would be wonderful to go back to Thurso but we were one of the later
families who enjoyed the hospitality of the locals. We were there
Dec 1990-1992, I used to hear lots about Thurso from the military
who I was stationed with from early 80's up to the 90's.
A bunch of us now live in Norfolk, VA area and would love to go back
if the opportunity would allow us. Take care and as you all say
Cheers!

Greetings to all fellow shipmates, land loch ed sailors, family and
friends of USNAVRADSTA / USNAVCOMU / USNAVCOMSTA Thurso
from Longmont, CO, USA. Special thanks to Chris Rivers
(aka. Christine Inglis) for letting me know about this web site!
I was stationed at Thurso from Jan. 77 to Aug. 79, Lori was stationed
there from Aug. 76 to Aug. 79.
We have always wanted to return but have been unable to do so. We're
going to try our best to make it to the reunion.
Lori and I have been trying to remember names of people we knew while
we were there, we've come up with about 50. Will post them to the
message board soon. I am interested in volunteering to help contact
people.
I do not have access to the internet from my PC at home but can check
this web site from work and at the library. If anyone would like to
send a message, the best way would be through the message board.
Hello Red, and Rusty!

Take care all.

Nice to see the tribute to the civilians who took care of us at the
base. You could add Bill Luke to that list, he worked the antenna fields
when I was there. Keep up the good work John.
Hope to see everyone next year. Hello to all my friends and family in
Thurso.

Time for me to get into the garage and dig out some photos taken when
there late 60's. Plan on attending next year.

Glad to see a site just for the reunion, especially since the KnowWhere
board has been infested by a pesky McFly. Brabara and I are looking
forward to next year, and will be there if the good Lord's willin' and
the creek don't rise. Cheers to all.

John,
Looking good - and we're both planning on attending the reunion -
whenever it may be in 2000. Hope a lot more of the older group
(stationed there in the late 60's) manage to make it over.

Glad someone is taking the iniative of arranging a reunion. I hope to be
there in July 2000. Thanks to all who are helping make this event.
There is a chance that my wife and I might sail our 36' sailboat to
Scotland, if it is ready at that time.

we could get a good turnout.
